The Addington
Designed in 1913 by John Frederick Abercromby, The Addington is a fine course which will challenge and excite golfers of all abilities.
Affording expansive views of the City from hilltop tees like those at the 14th and 16th, the Club’s fairways wander through mature pine and birch trees and create a feeling of intimacy in stark contrast to the looming mast of Crystal Palace and the backdrop provided by the Natwest Tower, Canary Wharf and the Shard.
Steeped in history, the course enjoyed its heyday in the 1930s when it was frequented by film stars, royalty, the cream of 1930s society & well-known golfers of the time. Written about by many, the course at The Addington remains virtually unchanged from that time and still uses many of the original features including the large wooden bridges which span the deep ravines throughout.
You may struggle to pick your favourite hole, but perhaps the 230-yard par 3, 13th – described by golf writer and former member Henry Longhurst, as ‘with the exception of the 5th at Pine Valley, near Philadelphia, the greatest one-shot hole in inland golf’ or the par 4, 6th which features the deep-set bunker described by P G Wodehouse as ‘that chasm from which no 18 handicap player has ever emerged within the memory of man’, will feature?
With no two holes the same, The Addington ensures golfers will need every shot in the bag to navigate their way round this exceptional course and promises a challenging game which will remain long in the memory.
Having benefited from a programme of course improvement & regeneration over the last few years, The Addington is, without doubt, one of the finest courses in South East England and is currently ranked 27 in Golf World’s Top 100 Courses, England.
