Coombe Hill Golf Club
The venerable Henry Longhurst once said of J.F. Abercromby, 'one whom posterity may well judge to have been the greatest of golf architects'. Although designing relatively few courses when compared to some of the other revered architects, of what was undoubtedly a Golden Age of the craft, it is the quality of his courses that makes it impossible to not consider him alongside the Colt's, MacKenzies, Park jnr's and Fowlers of the time.
Coombe Hill is a great example of his work, where he became the first arhitect to use a hot air balloon to survey the land. When looking from above at the piece of land he had at his disposal at Coombe Hill, he must have been thrilled by the prospect of creating a special course.
Situated some 10 miles from the centre of London, this oasis of calm, offers an excellent golfing challenge. It is dramatic in places with significant elevation change, but as a classic Surrey heathland it has heather, pines, Rhododendrons and birch trees in abundance.
The greens will always be commented upon as they are always in great condition and extremely quick. In fact the Club ouzes quality and attention to detail.
