Every golf traveller has a bucket list of famous courses. But as one recent group with GTE member Adventures In Golf found out, some of the most memorable rounds come from the courses you didn’t plan to play.
In June, Adventures In Golf was hosting eight clients on a golf trip north of the border. One of the big moments was meant to be a helicopter flight from Trump Turnberry to Royal Dornoch. With less than 24 hours’ notice, adverse weather grounded the flight.
Rather than write the day off, the team quickly found an alternative and sent the group to Machrihanish Golf Club on the Kintyre peninsula. They seemed to have found the only patch of sunshine in the country that day. The clients had a fantastic round and rated Machrihanish among the best experiences of their whole trip.
It’s a good reminder for operators and golfers alike. The well-known names will always draw people in, but the less obvious courses often deliver just as much, and sometimes more. A good operator with local knowledge and a willingness to adapt can turn a cancellation into the story clients tell when they get home.

Adventures In Golf has also appointed Rory Jack as a full-time member of the team. Rory worked as a client experience and driver concierge for the last two seasons, and his people skills and attention to detail have already won him fans. Several clients who travelled with him have already booked their return. The team also recently got together for a FAM trip to Ireland and Northern Ireland, including a visit to the Guinness Storehouse.
