Hindhead Golf Club
Founded in 1904 by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and a small group of fellow golfers, Hindhead enjoys one of the most dramatic settings in southern England. Holes two to nine run through a deep, heather-clad Ice Age valley close to the Devil’s Punchbowl, making the front nine the more spectacular, while the back nine plays across the heathland plateau above.
The J.H. Taylor-designed par-70 layout measures 6,390 yards and is regularly ranked among the best heathland courses in England.
Golf Tours London
With so many famous courses within Surrey and the surrounding area, there are a number of hidden gems that are not as well known as some of their illustrious neighbours. There are a number of heathland courses which offer a great experience and a true test.
With fantastic transport links into central London there are a host of cultural and heritage opportunities available via the rail network which takes just half an hour from Weybridge. There is also a fine range of accommodation from modern boutique hotels to charming old English pubs, making it a great destination for golfers and their travelling companions.
Camberley Heath Golf Club is one of the finest in Surrey. The Harry Colt-designed course is set in 135 acres of heathland framed by towering pines, and at 6,400 yards and par 71 it is a true test. Renowned for its mature fairways and subtle greens, the course still remains faithful to Colt’s early vision. The excellent location, outstanding course and wonderful hospitality make Camberley Heath a venue that you want to return to over and over again.
Farnham Golf Club, The Sands is situated in the heart of the Surrey countryside, between Farnham and Guildford, offering some of the most peaceful and tranquil surroundings that Surrey has to offer. Visitors are very welcome at Farnham Golf Club through all seasons, and its superb drainage makes it possible to play 52 weeks of the year.
The course is a mix of parkland and pine and heather. The first five holes start in parkland after which there is a sudden change in scenery as the pine trees close in and the heather replaces the grass. By the 11th, the vista opens again with views over farmland to the Hog’s Back. There are gentle rolling undulations, giving variety but not demanding excessive physical effort.
Hankley Common Golf Club
Hankley Common opened in 1897 as a nine-hole course, and James Braid advised on the addition of a further nine in 1922. Bobby Locke described it as the closest resemblance to a seaside links he had found inland, and the open, sandy heath certainly plays that way.
The par-3 7th is regarded as one of the finest short holes in the country, and the magnificent 18th makes a superb finish. The course and surrounding heath are a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
