Following a thoroughly enjoyable journey through Cornwall, and just after departing the charming seaside town of Bude, you arrive in Devon—a county as captivating from a golfing perspective as its neighbour, perhaps even offering more diverse experiences.
Devon boasts two distinct coastlines: the rugged North Coast, facing the Atlantic Ocean, and the slightly more sheltered South Coast, looking out towards the English Channel. Each coastline offers a stark contrast, with the North characterised by dramatic cliffs and vast sandy beaches, while the South blends Jurassic cliffs with stunning bays and hidden coves. Between these two striking coastlines lie vast natural expanses of moors, woodlands, farmlands, and valleys, including Dartmoor and Exmoor
This varied landscape greatly enriches the golfing experience in Devon. Along the South Coast, courses like East Devon, Teignmouth, and Thurlestone are blessed with beautiful coastal scenery. Further inland, Bovey Castle stands majestically at the edge of Dartmoor, offering pure escapism. Its course is a delightful mix of mature trees, streams, and gently rolling terrain. Similarly, Yelverton offers stunning views across Dartmoor and is a classic moorland course.
However, my journey takes me along the North Coast, and while time does not permit a stop at the historic Royal North Devon Golf Club—a must for any golf enthusiast seeking a connection to the sport’s past—the impressive Saunton Golf Club awaits.
Saunton offers 36 holes of top-tier links golf. Were it not for Devon’s remote location and limited infrastructure, the Herbert Fowler-designed East Course could undoubtedly host an Open Championship. The West Course, while slightly shorter and more intricate, is no less challenging or enjoyable and remains a favourite for many golfers.
The view as you drive through the gates, or relax with a drink on the clubhouse patio, both perched above the golfing paradise below, is one you will not easily forget.
While Saunton may not have the same global profile as other links courses, largely due to its isolated location, to skip playing both the East and West courses would be a serious oversight for any dedicated golfer.
To complete the experience, consider staying at the neighbouring Saunton Sands Hotel and Spa. This iconic Art Deco landmark, perched above the breathtaking Saunton Sands beach and dunes, offers luxury and relaxation in equal measure. The powerful, mesmerising sea draws surfers from far and wide, and the laid-back vibe of the surfing community subtly permeates this otherwise sophisticated hotel. Here, you can enjoy first-class food, unwind, and immerse yourself in the stunning natural surroundings.
Saunton Sands Hotel
Saunton, Near Braunton, North Devon, EX33 1LQ
Luxury Hotel in stunning location and easy reach of Saunton GC and Royal North Devon.
Many of the hotel’s amenities—its pool, spa, and most rooms—boast uninterrupted views of the rolling waves and expansive beach. The Art Deco movement, which peaked in the 1920s, was synonymous with luxury, glamour, and exuberance. A stay at Saunton Sands Hotel will leave you invigorated and cheerful—especially after a couple of birdies on the East Course!
Whilst a visit to Saunton feels as if you are truly getting off the grid, it is only 5 minutes from the villages of Braunton and Croyde, and only 20 minutes from the town of Barnstaple complete with shops, market and theatre.
Now, homeward bound, having reconnected with one of England’s most engaging and pleasurable golfing regions, my advice to fellow golfers is simple: come and discover the Southwest for yourselves. Enjoy!
