England’s Golf Coast Prepares for a Championship Summer

Few golf regions anywhere in the world will host a run of championships quite like this.

In the summer of 2026, England’s Golf Coast will stage three of the game’s most prestigious events in little more than a month — with The Amateur Championship at Royal Liverpool in June, The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale in July and the AIG Women’s Open at Royal Lytham & St Annes later the same month.

For the north-west of England, it represents an extraordinary moment when the global spotlight will fall on one of the most concentrated collections of championship links in world golf.

England’s Golf Coast in the Global Spotlight

Few stretches of coastline can match the pedigree of courses found along England’s north-west “Golf Coast”. Within a short distance sit Royal Liverpool, Royal Birkdale and Royal Lytham & St Annes — three venues that have played a defining role in championship golf for more than a century.

This summer that heritage will once again be on show as the world’s best players, media and fans arrive on the Lancashire coast for an extraordinary run of tournaments.

Geoff Harris of England’s Golf Coast says the scale of the moment is unprecedented for the region.

“With Royal Liverpool hosting the Amateur Championship in June, Royal Birkdale hosting the Open Championship in July, and Royal Lytham & St. Anne’s hosting the AIG Women’s Open later that same month, 2026 is an unprecedented year for championship golf in the Northwest of England. While it brings with it some challenges, most notably the strain on visitor tee time availability, it is undoubtedly a fantastic spotlight on the region which will bring benefits for many years to come.”

A Destination Beyond the Championship

For golf tourism professionals, the significance extends well beyond the tournaments themselves. Major championships provide a powerful showcase for destinations and millions of viewers around the world will once again see the dunes, traditional clubhouses and distinctive character that define England’s links golf.

The real strength of England’s Golf Coast lies in its depth. Within a short drive of Royal Birkdale are some of the finest links courses in Britain, including Hillside, Formby and Southport & Ainsdale.

For visiting golfers, the opportunity to experience several world-class links layouts within a single trip is unusual. For tour operators and travel planners, that concentration of great courses makes the region one of the most compelling golf destinations in Europe.

A Global Moment for English Golf

As the golfing world turns its attention to England’s north-west this summer, the wider opportunity for English golf is clear.

For many international golfers watching around the world, their first glimpse of England’s Golf Coast will not simply be a championship venue, but a coastline defined by remarkable links golf.

And for a growing number of visitors, that first glimpse will become the start of a future trip.
