GTE on Tour – Part 1, Northumberland

Matfen Hall - Golf & Spa

I recently spent a few days in Northumberland, one of my absolute favourite places in the UK. It is an area I return to often, drawn by the stunning landscapes, historic castles, and the fantastic golf courses that are always a joy to play.

With Golf Tourism England set to host its 6th GTE Annual Convention next year at the luxurious five-star Matfen Hall Hotel Spa and Golf, not far from Newcastle, I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to get an early taste of what this venue has to offer. So, I booked two nights at Matfen Hall, curious to explore this gothic mansion I had heard so much about.

From the moment I arrived, I was captivated. Matfen Hall has all the grandeur you would expect from a period mansion, situated on a sprawling estate with mature parklands, ancient stone walls, winding streams, and peaceful lakes. Entering the hotel, I was greeted by a cavernous hallway with a grand staircase, setting an elegant tone that was both welcoming and impressive. Though Matfen’s history is palpable in every corner, the owners have carefully modernised the estate, blending luxurious contemporary touches with the 17th-century architecture.

Matfen Hall - The Keepers Dining

The golf course has further improvements planned soon—a promising prospect for both new and returning visitors. I spent one evening at the newly opened The Keepers. The clubhouse is a relaxed and stylish space, offering a top-tier dining experience in a more laid-back setting than the hotel’s fine dining options.

I have no doubt that delegates attending next year’s event are in for a treat. Matfen Hall is a destination on the rise, delivering a first-class experience that leaves a lasting impression.

My next stop was Newcastle’s iconic Northumberland Golf Club. The moment you pass through the gates, it is clear this is a special venue. The clubhouse has that charming, exclusive atmosphere you would expect from a traditional private club, with a distinct character that sets it apart.

The course, designed by the famous architects Harry Colt and James Braid, is highly regarded in the North East. Built within and around the perimeter of Newcastle’s horse racing track, it has a unique ambiance that makes you feel like part of a broader sporting tradition. With its classic heathland layout, the course provides firm fairways and fast greens—ideal for any golfer who appreciates a traditional yet challenging game. Being so close to the city centre also makes it the perfect choice for anyone staying in the city.

Next, I could not resist a visit to Close House, possibly the region’s most exclusive golf club. With its history of hosting events like the British Masters, ties to Lee Westwood, and a distinguished membership, it has gained a well-deserved reputation. Access here is understandably limited, and green fees reflect its exclusivity, but it is worth every bit for those lucky enough to secure a tee time—walking in the footsteps of some of the best golfers in the country is a rare treat.

For my final stop, I made the 40-minute drive out to Slaley Hall, a 36-hole championship resort that still retains an aura of golfing excellence. Though it has flown somewhat under the radar in recent years, Slaley Hall was once a regular venue for the European Tour, hosting in their prime legends like Seve Ballesteros, Bernhard Langer, and Sandy Lyle on its renowned Hunting course.

Slaley Hall - Hunting 2nd

Dubbed the “Augusta of the North” in its heyday, Slaley’s towering trees, rolling hills, breathtaking views, and challenging course make it easy to see why. Few courses compare to Augusta, but Slaley Hall is still an exceptional resort, with a spacious hotel, quality spa, newly refurbished rooms, several dining choices, and a vibrant golfers’ bar. Now under the management of Q Hotels, Slaley Hall seems poised to reclaim its place among the North’s top golf destinations.

Newcastle and its surroundings have so much to offer, from outstanding golf courses to the lively city itself. The combination of excellent golf and the vibrant energy of Newcastle makes it the perfect destination for anyone looking to mix a few rounds with a memorable city break.
