More than a world famous Cathedral and University

Uncover the rich heritage and exceptional golfing experiences of the North East with The Durham Tour. This tour brings together a collection of exceptional courses, each steeped in history and character, with warm and welcoming hospitality. Whether it’s the challenge of Brancepeth Castle, the architectural brilliance of South Moor, or the versatility of Ramside, this tour offers a truly memorable golfing escape.

Brancepeth Castle Golf Club

Set within the grounds of a historic castle, Brancepeth Castle Golf Club is a stunning parkland course that offers a truly unique golfing experience. Designed by Harry Colt in 1924, the 6,400-yard course is known for its dramatic ravines, tree-lined fairways, and fast, undulating greens. The layout combines strategic challenges with natural beauty, making it one of the region’s finest courses. Its picturesque setting and historic charm add an unforgettable dimension to every round.

South Moor Golf Club

Designed by the legendary Dr. Alister MacKenzie, South Moor Golf Club is a hidden gem that exemplifies classic heathland golf. The par-71 layout, stretching to 6,500 yards, features rolling fairways, well-placed bunkers, and large greens that demand accuracy and careful shot planning. The course’s elevated position provides panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, enhancing the experience. With its rich history and ties to one of golf’s greatest architects, South Moor is a must-play for enthusiasts.

Ramside Golf Club

Ramside Golf Club offers two championship courses—the Prince Bishops’ Course and the Cathedral Course—set within a sprawling 350-acre estate. The Prince Bishops’ Course is a parkland layout with dramatic water features, large greens, and strategic bunkering, while the Cathedral Course blends natural beauty with challenging elevation changes and superbly maintained fairways. Both courses provide a first-class golfing experience, complemented by excellent practice facilities and a welcoming clubhouse.

The Kings Lodge Inn

Nestled in the heart of Durham, The Kings Lodge Inn offers a cozy and welcoming retreat after a day on the fairways. This traditional inn combines historic charm with modern comfort, featuring comfortable rooms and warm, attentive service. Guests can enjoy hearty meals in the on-site restaurant, which prides itself on using locally sourced ingredients, and unwind with a drink in the relaxed bar. Its central location makes it an ideal base for exploring Durham and its surrounding courses.

Local Sights

Durham is a city steeped in history and culture, offering plenty to explore beyond the fairways. Durham Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a masterpiece of Norman architecture and considered one of the finest cathedrals in Europe. Its majestic towers offer breathtaking views of the city and surrounding countryside. Nearby, Durham Castle, which dates back to the 11th century, is a fascinating glimpse into the region’s medieval past and now serves as part of Durham University.

Stroll along the scenic River Wear, which winds through the city, or visit the charming streets of Durham’s historic city centre, filled with boutique shops, cafes, and traditional pubs. For those who enjoy nature, the Durham Dales and the dramatic landscapes of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty are just a short drive away, offering stunning walks and views.
