After over 10 years running GTE, it’s no surprise that I’ve visited nearly every notable golf club in England. During this time, I’ve experienced the joy of playing most of the courses ranked in the top 100—and perhaps even the top 150. Yet, despite my extensive travels, there are a few clubs I’ve visited multiple times without ever stepping onto the first tee.
Driving through the gates of a prestigious course, gazing longingly at the challenge that awaits, and leaving without hitting a single shot—there’s no feeling more frustrating for a golfer. For me, this frustration is most acute with the following five courses, which are at the very top of my “must-play” list for 2025:
1. Perranporth Golf Club
Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Cornwall’s coastline, Perranporth is celebrated for its stunning scenery and architectural brilliance. Its rugged natural beauty and ingenious design have earned it glowing reviews, describing it as an unforgettable experience for any golfer.
2. The Northumberland Golf Club
Any course designed by Harry Colt immediately grabs my attention, and The Northumberland is no exception. Built around a historic horse racing track, this prestigious club intrigues me with how Colt’s renowned design philosophy integrates with such a unique setting.
3. Cavendish Golf Club
Alister MacKenzie’s genius is on full display at Cavendish. This course is particularly fascinating, as its holes are said to have inspired some of MacKenzie’s iconic designs at Augusta National. Playing here is like stepping into a piece of golfing history.
4. Beau Desert Golf Club
Tucked away in the Midlands, this Herbert Fowler-designed heathland course is a true hidden gem. Set on the edge of a forest, its natural beauty and strategic layout make it a classic I simply must experience.
There are a few others still on my radar, but until I cross these five off my list, I’ll remain restless!
